It is being widely reported that current AWS Heavyweight Champion Mercedes Martinez – one of the hottest free agents in women’s wrestling – has officially signed with WWE.
Martinez has a string of accolades under her belt, including two stints as Shimmer Champion and five WXW Women’s Championship reigns. And the American superstar is no stranger to the British scene. As well as numerous appearances for Pro Wrestling: EVE and Revolution Pro Wrestling, she’s held the Bellatrix World Championship and has wrestled for their sister promotion, World Association of Wrestling.
A true industry veteran, Martinez has been wrestling since 2000. She’s faced the likes of Sumie Sakai, Shayna Baszler, Jazz and Mickie James across a wide range of promotions. She competed twice in WWE’s Mae Young Classic, and though she did not make the finals in either tournament, her match against Meiko Satomura at the second Mae Young Classic was widely lauded as an instant classic.
More recently, Martinez has appeared on television as part of the All Elite Wrestling roster. Debuting as a surprise entrant at the women’s Casino Battle Royal, she received a huge reception. In 2019, Sports Illustrated named Mercedes Martinez in their top 10 women wrestlers.
